Each weekday morning begins with a 6:30 a.m. wake-up call by the Attendant on duty. Residents must then report to the dining area for breakfast. Breakfast is finished by 7:30 a.m. when residents begin their assigned house duties (chores) and prepare themselves for the day by showering, shaving, and being properly dressed. Chores include performing such tasks as making their beds, tidying up their rooms, washing and drying breakfast dishes, cleaning the bathrooms (3 bathrooms), sweeping and mopping the floors, vacuuming the carpets and general cleaning.
Each weekday, after chores are completed and until 9:00 a.m., residents in this phase are permitted to socialize, read the morning paper, listen to the news, and enjoy free time. At 9:00 a.m. a mandatory in-house meeting is conducted by an appointed individual. These meetings are usually conducted out of the 24 Hour Thought for the Day book followed by some discussion. They generally last for one hour, and hopefully start the individual's day with a positive attitude.
From 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., it is rest period for the residents in phase one. At 11:00 a.m., these residents are required to attend the prepared lunch. The clean up for the dining area and kitchen begin at 11:30 a.m. This duty is performed by the resident on house duties for the day.
The afternoons are set aside for doctors appointments (arranged by the Caseworker) and acquiring such items as identification cards, clothing, literature, and change of address (the resident is helped by the Caseworker or Attendant in achieving these short term goals).
Supper is served at 4:30 p.m. and is mandatory for all residents in all phases. General house chores such as cleaning the kitchen, cleaning the dining area, sweeping and mopping the floors, cleaning the bathrooms, etc., begins at 5:00 p.m.
Residents in phase one must meet individually with their Caseworker at least twice weekly. This meeting is called a caseload. During these caseloads, short-term goals are set (identification, clothing, change of address, etc.), and there are general discussions of how the new resident is adjusting to the house rules and regulations. Residents are encouraged to speak about their feelings and concerns regarding recovery.
There is one night a week where there is an in-house meeting which begins at 6:00 p.m. and runs approximately for a hour. It is mandatory that all residents in all phases attend this meeting. Each Monday evening a meeting is conducted by the residents, and deals with resident concerns. This meeting gives residents the opportunity to voice their opinions on any issues they think that the staff should be made aware of. These issues and concerns are then brought back to the staff by a spokesperson for the residents. The resident concern meeting also addresses any internal concerns that the residents may have towards one another.
On occasion, guest speakers who are in recovery, conduct meetings to share their experience, strength, and hope.
Residents in phase one are required to attend nine (9) meetings a week. There are seven (7) evening meetings along with a noon meeting each Wednesday and Friday. If there is no in-house meeting, the residents are required to attend a designated outside self-help meeting.
The front room is used for T.V. and movies (movies must be approved by the staff on duty) after the meetings and until midnight, when all audio visual equipment is turned off. On Friday and Saturday nights all audio visual equipment is turned off at 2:00 a.m. The T.V. is not permitted on during the weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., however, treatment films are shown periodically.
At 9:00 p.m. a night lunch is made available for those who may want a snack before retiring for the night.
